How to Avoid Feeding Errors in SMT Production

SMT machines are high-cost, high-speed automated equipment.
Once production begins, they can quickly complete assigned tasks. However, this speed also comes with a high risk of feeding the wrong material reel. Given the large number of production batches running online, even a single mistake can result in an entire batch of defective products, leading to significant losses.

To mitigate this risk, SMT workshops (or enterprises) typically allocate substantial resources before machine start-up to carefully check and verify:

• Reel numbers
• Material names
• Machine numbers
• Material quantities
• Reel feeding sequence, etc.

 Preventive Solutions

1. System-based Information Binding in Advance
Within the internal system, key elements related to the production order and SMT machines are strictly linked, including:

• Machine number
• Placement platform number
• Feeder station number
• Left/Right feeder position
• Material batch codes

These four constraint factors are tightly bound to prevent mismatches.

2. Raw Material Allocation to On-site Warehouse
Each day, the production department transfers the required material reels from the main warehouse to the on-site warehouse for the next day’s production.

3. Operators Refer to Feeder Station Table on Workstation Terminals
The engineering department imports feeder station tables into the workstation terminals.
During material loading, operators refer directly to the terminal to confirm placement positions.

4. PDA Scanning for Material Feeding
The PDA shares a database with the workstation terminal.
Operators simply scan the QR code of the placement machine using the PDA, which will automatically display:

• Manufacturing order number
• Product name
• Specification
• Feeder position (L or R), etc.

Operators then fetch the corresponding reels from the on-site warehouse and load them directly.

5. PDA Error Alerts for Misfeeds or Duplicate Feeding

• If a reel position has already been loaded, scanning it again will trigger an error: “Duplicate feeding not allowed”.
• If the reel is incorrect or unrecognized (not linked in the system), the PDA will show: “Material not found”.
• By combining the feeder station table on the terminal and PDA scanning validation, any incorrect feeding is effectively blocked.
