Double Splice Tape vs Single Splice Tape with Copper Clip?

In the SMT production process, splicing is a critical step to ensure the continuous operation of the pick-and-place machine and to improve production efficiency.
Among the common splicing methods, “double-sided splice tape” and “single-sided splice tape with copper clip” are two popular options. Many production line managers or engineers often face a choice between the two: Which is more stable? Which is more cost-effective? Which is better suited for our production line?

1. Two Splicing Methods

1.1 Double-Sided Splice Tape
Double-sided splice tape is one of the mainstream splicing methods. It has adhesive layers on both sides and positioning holes, eliminating the need for splicing tools. By adhering to both the top and bottom of the old and new carrier tapes, it enables high-efficiency, batch splicing.
Simple splicing process; supports common tape widths like 8mm, 12mm, and 16mm.
Compatible with various tape types such as paper and embossed tapes.

1.2 Single-Sided Splice Tape + Copper Clip
This is one of the traditional splicing methods. After attaching a metal copper clip on the back using a splicing tool, the operator uses single-sided adhesive tape to bond the tapes, enhancing the firmness of the splice.
The copper clip acts as a “clamp” to provide strong hold, suitable for large paper tape splicing.
Lower cost and strong adhesion, but involves more steps in the operation.

Both splicing methods have their pros and cons. In most cases, both materials are prepared in advance, and the factory selects the appropriate method based on the type of carrier tape.

Notes:

1. The width of the splice tape must match the carrier tape (e.g., 8mm, 12mm, 16mm, etc.).
2. Before splicing, be sure to remove dust and oil from the tape to ensure cleanliness.
3. For some specific brands of adhesive tape, ensure that the correct splicing tools are used accordingly.
